Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, right, speaks with Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, center, and Chief of General Staff Nikolai Makarov, left, at the staff of the 58th Army in Vladikavkaz, on November 21, 2011.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ordered the military to prepare the capability to “destroy” the command structure of the planned U.S. missile-defense system in Europe.
Russia may also station strike missiles on its southern and western flanks, including Iskander rockets in the Kaliningrad exclave between Poland and Lithuania, both members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the European Union, Medvedev said on state television today.
“I have ordered the armed forces to develop measures to ensure, if necessary, that we can destroy the command and control systems” of the U.S. shield, Medvedev said. “These measures are appropriate, effective and low-cost.”
Russia has warned the U.S.-led plan may provoke a new arms race and upset a strategic balance in the region by threatening its nuclear deterrent capability. The U.S. is ignoring Russia’s concerns about positioning parts of the shield in eastern Europe and “accelerating” its development, the president said.
Spain last month became the fourth European nation agreeing to participate directly in the missile defense program, intended to protect against attacks from adversaries such as Iran. President Barack Obama pursued plans for the Europe-wide system in 2009, and the administration has also obtained agreements with Poland, Romania and Turkey to host elements of the shield.

President Obama confirmed plans to have all U.S. troops out of Iraq by Jan. 1, formally ending the war that began more than eight-and-a-half years ago and has taken more than 4,400 American lives.
“After nearly nine years, America’s war in Iraq will be over,” Obama said at the White House, adding that most U.S. troops will be “home for the holidays.”
Obama noted that he pledged to end the Iraq war during his 2008 presidential campaign.
The president spoke in the White House briefing room after holding a secure video conference with Iraq prime minister Nouri al-Maliki. Obama said he and the Iraqi leader are in “full agreement about how to move forward.”
The U.S. has had a long-standing agreement to withdraw all combat troops from Iraq by the end of this year, but officials from both countries had discussed maintaining a U.S. residual force to train Iraqi forces.
But the U,S, eventually balked at maintaining a residual force because Iraq has refused to grant American troops legal immunity in Iraqi courts.
Obama praised the U.S. troops for their efforts in Iraq, saying they will leave “with their heads held high, proud of their success, and knowing that the American people stand united in our support for our troops.”
He also pledged assistance and “a strong and enduring partnership” with the government in Iraq.
With our diplomats and civilian advisers in the lead, we will help Iraqis strengthen institutions that are just, representative, and accountable,’ Obama said. “We’ll build new ties of trade and of commerce, culture and education that unleash the potential of the Iraqi people.”

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011They are CEOs and money managers, doctors and lawyers, as might be expected. But they are also computer technicians, scientists and even farmers. Some are singers and movie stars (even though they may not like to admit it) and the rest of them are spread among various professions.
These days they are also the most vilified members of American society – also known as the 1 Percenters, who control about two-fifths of the country’s wealth and fuel nearly 100 percent of the protests around Wall Street, through the rest of the country and around the world.
“We are the 99 percent!” is the favorite refrain of the protesters, who believe they are being cheated out of the lifestyle they deserve by the elite ruling class.
A look at who constitutes the 1 Percenters is at once instructive, disturbing and a bit surprising.
It is instructive in that the greatest number do not appear to be the bankers and traders at the center of the Occupy Wall Street movement’s ire. It is disturbing in that such a small group can control so much wealth and power. And it is a bit surprising in that while the protesters make it sound as if concentration of wealth is a relatively new phenomenon, it in fact has been pretty much this way for going on a century now.

King Abdullah‘s legacy is, in Saudi terms, reform-minded, but his heirs may reverse even this
The Arab Spring has seen seemingly indomitable leaderships toppled and a mass call, particularly among young people, for reform. Its fall-out has left the leaders of Saudi Arabia feeling under siege, as Middle East analyst Roger Hardy explains.
Consider how the world looks to Saudi Arabia’s frail and aging ruler, King Abdullah.
Enemies lurk everywhere. The Arab Spring has unleashed forces which no-one can control, and from which no Arab state is immune.
Iran is deemed to be stirring every pot, from Lebanon to Bahrain.
Neighbouring Yemen is increasingly unstable – and plays host to a branch of al-Qaeda which threatens Saudi security.
Barack Obama’s America is seen as betraying the Saudi kingdom in its hour of need.
Saudi Arabia, in short, is under siege – and King Abdullah’s instinct is to batten down the hatches.
Echoes from the past
In some ways, Saudi rulers have been here before.
In the 1950s and 1960s, a wave of Arab nationalism emanating from Egypt swept over the Middle East – threatening the pro-Western monarchies such as the House of Saud with destruction.
Saudi women will soon be allowed to vote, although they remain banned from driving
Then, too, the kingdom felt encircled by hostile forces.
Then, too, petro-dollars and Western support were weak tools for fending off trouble.
Not that oil wealth does not sometimes come in handy.
One of King Abdullah’s responses to the Arab Spring has been massive hand-outs to keep his people sweet.
Moreover, the kingdom has more reason than ever to use cheque-book diplomacy in a bid to win friends and influence people throughout the region.
But such measures may not be enough.

It is the exact spot where the new sovereign state was declared. But the year was 1948 and the state was Israel.
Now new officers in the Israeli army are brought to Independence Hall on Rothschild Boulevard in Tel Aviv as part of their education in the history of the Jewish state.
On the day before Mahmoud Abbas was expected to launch his bid for a Palestinian state, guide Amir Rimon 28, was lecturing a group of young soldiers under one of Rothschild’s broad ficus trees.

The host of a popular satirical news show in the United States weighed in on the Palestinian bid for United Nations membership on Thursday night, deriding U.S. President Obama’s suggestion that Palestinian statehood could only come as a result of negotiations with Israel.

Friday, September 23rd, 2011Sooner or later, it’s going to happen. Most likely, the moment will come just before his first head-of-state meeting in New York. Or perhaps it will happen just before his first side-bar meeting with Binyamin Netanyahu. Or then again, it may come as the cumulative reaction to a series of embarrassing encounters with fellow world leaders. But the moment will come.
At some point this coming week, during his visit to the this year’s opening of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, US President Barack Obama is going to have a nearly irresistible urge. He is going to want to stand up to his hovering political handlers and the smothering bureaucracy which tries to dictate his every move, summon his personal dignity, and say “Enough”.
In April of 1995, President Clinton played host to then-Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan. US-Pakistan relations were in sharp decline. A few years before, the US had begun to implement sanctions mandated by the so-called Pressler Amendment, under which Pakistan was to be punished with a complete cutoff of aid and of military sales if it were found to be pursuing a nuclear-weapons capability. The first President Bush had made such a finding, and now the ties between the two countries were being progressively cut.
At the heart of the growing ill-feeling between the two nations was the US cancellation of a previously-agreed sale of 28 F-16 fighter aircraft. The Pakistanis had realised when they signed the purchase deal that it might be cancelled if the Pressler Amendment were invoked. Now, given the law and the previous assertion of Pakistani culpability from President Bush, there was no longer any question of delivering the aircraft. But there was another wrinkle.

The most popular national political figure in America today is one who was rejected by her own party three years ago: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Nearly two-thirds of Americans hold a favorable view of her and one-third are suffering a form of buyer’s remorse, saying the U.S. would be better off now if she had become president in 2008 instead of Barack Obama.
The finding in the latest Bloomberg National Poll shows a higher level of wishful thinking about a Hillary Clinton presidency than when a similar question was asked in July 2010. Then, a quarter of Americans held such a view.
“Looking back, I wonder if she would have been a stronger leader, knowing the games and the politics and all that goes on,” said Susan Dunlop, 50, a homemaker in New Port Richey, Florida. “I don’t think she would have bent as much.”
Clinton, 63, a former first lady and U.S. senator from New York, fought with Obama for the Democratic nomination until June 2008, in what was often a combative primary that included her questioning his presidential readiness.
While 34 percent say things would be better under a Clinton administration, almost half — 47 percent — say things would be about the same and 13 percent say worse.
“Some of her appeal is that she is not Barack Obama,” said J. Ann Selzer, president of Des Moines, Iowa-based Selzer & Co., which conducted the Sept. 9-12 poll.

A sign advertises the opening of the National September 11 Memorial visitors center in New York, U.S., on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has “specific, credible but unconfirmed threat information” as the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks nears, agency spokesman Matt Chandler said in a statement.
The threat concerns a possible al-Qaeda-sponsored attack targeting New York or Washington on or near the anniversary of the attack, said a different U.S. official, who wasn’t authorized to discuss the matter publicly. The official said the intelligence concerns a possible vehicle-borne attack, perhaps on a transportation hub or bottleneck, and cautioned that the options may be broader than a car or truck bombing.
Another intelligence official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said the information hasn’t been fully vetted.
President Barack Obama was briefed on the threat today and received updates throughout the day, according to a statement from a White House official who asked not to be identified.
Obama directed counter-terrorism officials to redouble their efforts, which had already been increased in advance of the anniversary of the 2001 attacks on New York City’s World Trade Center and the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C., the White House official said.
New York police will increase security after receiving information of the possible targeting of New York for an attack keyed to the Sept. 11 anniversary, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.
